Seattle Vacation Day 2: Robots and Improv

IMAG1994

So Jason helps out with robotics in seattle. Something he has been doing for 5 years. That was the reason we had to get back home early on friday night. The weather today was pretty bad, all nice and wet. It was a good thing the robotics competition was all day.

The rules for this year robotics was teams of 3 robots would try to score balls through a hole on the corners, or shoot it through the holes in the wall.

As for points, there are 10 seconds of automated robotic scoring, then 2 minutes of manual control. The robots gets points for passing the ball to each other and over the truss.

It is pretty fun watching all these high schoolers get involved. They had a mascot dance off, and a lot of really cool pins. The one thing that people give out are pins of their teams, so I accumulated many of them.

There were 4 matches in the morning, then the top 10 teams will draft teammates. It was interesting watching my friend’s advisor and students trying to figure out which team they wanted to draft. All the kids scouted other teams and gave them rankings on defense, passing, scoring, speed, power, and other things. Then these teams started walking around to each other making alliances.

IMAG2000This is my friend’s team, and their robot . I also did see a lot of drama during the matches. The team captain cried a little, because her ego was hurt because she wasn’t given a chance to draft teams. So she was confused as to why she was on the team. Then the driver of the team was super pissed off at the refs, and thought he was getting screwed over by them. Then there were a couple of the other kids that were pretty interesting. Smile

I really liked the sonic squirrels, they had awesome hats, and their mascot was carrying a guitar.

It was so busy that my friend jason couldn’t even eat. So I ended up getting him some food from this chinese restaurant/japaanese place. I got him sushi, and I got salmon teryaki.

The funny story happened when I was driving my friend’s truck. I didn’t know that his e-brake didn’t really work. So I latched it in, and I couldn’t get it to unlock. There I was sitting there trying to pull the e-brake off. Then after 5 minutes, I came off, and I never touched it again. Smile

Then for dinner we went to Chinook’s for dinner. It was a really good restaurant, the food was really good, and the waiter/waitresses were nice. The best thing that I always learn is to ask the waiter what he likes. Today, he told us there was 1 items off the menu that were really good. It was the crab cakes, and that thing melted in my mouth.

Then the waiter gave us his thought on everything. Smile

Then to end the night we went to sports improv in Seattle.

IMAG2008

I really liked their stage, it was really fun to watch. My favorite game of the night was weekend at Berney’s. Watching the players trying to play all the other team player’s moves and lines.

The best part of the night was the crowd. Like all comedy sports, it is a PG show, however there were no kids there tonight. Three audience members got “paper bagged” tonight for saying things that were not PG. One said a female clothing, then his friend got in trouble for saying the same thing.

My favorite was they were coming up with lines, and one of them was “something you put on your feet”, and this guy next to me says “wife”, with his girlfriend/wife next to him. So they brown bagged him. One of the female improv players came in and was wondering what happened.

Eventually the two guys that were kind of drunk and making it really funny got brown bagged together, and the bag was broken. So the last game, the ref went “okay, there are no kids, and my brown bag is broken, so we will relax the PG guidelines”

As for the most impressive thing I saw tonight. It was one of the actors guessing through charades, archimedes throwing a faberege egg in narnia.

Jason really enjoyed it, and we ended up getting back around midnight. That is when Jason opened up guitarsmith, so I showed him how to play the guitar. We did that for another couple of hours.
