1/2 Marathon/SoCal Trip Fun

So this weekend I went down to SoCal to run the disney half marathon. Got the rental car in the morning and it was interesting talking to the lady. She was new there, and did not have a key yet. Her manager was driving back from bakersfield, because someone had rented a BMW from enterprise and essentially just drove away and never came back. =(

LA traffic, Hooray =(

The car that we rented to drive down was a dodge caliber. That car is interesting, if i turned up the music too loud, the bass would shake my rearview mirror when I drove. =)

We left the bay area around 1pm, and didn’t get to irvine till around 9:45ish. We were all hanging out at our friends place down there. We got to sleep around midnight. Freaking Ben, kept on talking at night because he was too nervous for the upcoming race in the morning.

What time did we wake up for the race? 3:30am. Had to drive out to Knotts berry farm to pick up one more guy, and then get to disneyland by 4:30am. So we hung out around there taking pictures until the race started corraling us up for the 6:00am race start.

My favorite part of the race was the opening start of the race. Mickey and Minnie were there, and we were in corral F. Our corral got to start at around 6:35. So the 2011 Disney Half Marathon started off in the dark.

The joke was the following. Robert has been training for a full marathon, so he is in pretty good shape. He could do the half in around 1:55 if he wanted to. However, for this race, we had set up a facebook group, and 14 people had signed up for the race. And Ben was one the 4 that had actually signed up. The only reason he did sign up was because he though 14 of us was running.

Because of that, Ben was really sad to find out it was only us 4. So Robert had promised him that he would stay with him the whole entire race. However, 25 minutes before the race starts, Robert has to go to the restroom, and Dennis and I never see him again until the end of the race. As for Ben, he started saying “Aww Man, Robert had promised me he would be with me for the whole entire race, and he has already left me”. This was 5 minutes before the race was starting for our corral. So Ben ran with us for half a mile, and then we left him because he ran too slow for us. =)

Robert did eventually get to run in the race, but had to wait until the last corral had left then he could start. So he was a good 30 minute behind us. Ben found him looking for him as he was leaving the port-o-potty. It was a good thing, because robert would have ran past him to find him. =)

Robert was just running for fun with Ben. He would take pictures with each of the chracters and then sprint to catch up to Ben. =)

My favorite part of the race was anaheim angels stadium. There was a good 2-3k group of people in there. A lot of boy scouts who wanted to give high fives. =) A lot of the people running next to me were serious or didn’t pay attention as much to the cheering. However, I really liked the people cheering so i ran over and gave every boyscout a high five (I was doing a side shuffle, to do a two handed high five). Best part was that when the boyscouts lining the side all saw I was going to give them a high five, they cheered even louder, and all of them stuck their hands out as I ran by them. =) I actually passed people with my side steps, it felt like the way a WWE wrestler enters a ring and high fives the crowd. =)

So Dennis finishes 2:04, I finish 2:21, Ben like around 3:40.

To celebrate the end of the race, we all sat down and soaked in a jacuzzi. =)

That night we met up with the rest of our friends that had watched us run. Went to a ramen place in irvine which was really good, but kind of pricy.

Then we did a group photo after dinner. =)

jump

(This was a failed jump, the lady pressed the camera too early).

All of us that were running the marathon slept pretty early while everyone else was still hanging out and talking at night. Also went on trying to catch some random high school boys that were randomly doorbell ditching the houses in the complex. =)

Today for labor day, we ate at chick-fil-a before coming back home. Which I haven’t eaten in a long while. It was my favorite place to eat in college, at SLO.
